Our homework for January was the Moon Phase Project. We were asked to observe the moon every night and draw it on our moon phase calendar. This way we were able to see how the moon went from the new moon on the 8th of January, to the full moon on the 24th of January and also how it began to wane again. This week, we compared our observations as a group and made our own conclusions about the moon. We learned the about how the sun illuminates the moon during a full moon and when there is a new moon, the moon doesn’t receive any light from the sun. It takes the moon a month (or 30 days) to orbit the earth. During this time, we can observe the moon in all of its phases. We plan to do another project to see the phases of the moon next week! We can’t wait!
We are also learning about all types of maps. World maps, country maps, globes, museum maps, metro maps and even Disneyland has a map. We learned a song about the 7 continents and we can locate them on a world map. We have fun saying which countries belong to which continents. On Wednesday, we did a fun activity where we had to find all kinds of different information by using looking at the different maps. It was fun to discover the information on our own and later share it with the rest of the class. We used the map keys, identified cities and even found a painting by El Greco in the Prado Museum map.
In Spanish class, we got to create postcards with different cities that we investigated with the help of the 6th grade class last week. Our teachers assigned each of us a city and the 6th graders came to our class and we were able to find the information by searching online with using their iPad. We found out the important information and landmarks and drew pictures that represented the city just like a real post card. We later wrote a short note on it to the 6th grader who helped us! We learned so much about our world.
